Every one of these started as words in a book. Describe exactly what you want and you might get it. Describe something vague and you'll get something nobody expected. That's the fun part.

Spotlight
Permanent darkness for players, permanent glowing for mobs. You can only see what's trying to kill you.
Pompeii
Volcanic terrain with instant fire spread. Light one tree and watch the world solve itself.
Featherfall
Skylands with 5x movement speed over void. You overshoot the next island by exactly the distance that kills you.
Skinnerbox
Diamond ore terrain stretching to the horizon. Hands only, no crafting, no tools.
Meteor
Pillar forest under meteor showers with all blocks gravity-enabled. The pillars were load-bearing.
